Title:
The Passing Of The Year
Program:
Jonathan Dove’s The Passing of the Year provides the dramaturgical framework of the programme. Written in memory of his mother, this cycle understands the course of the year as a metaphor for social transformation and deeply personal experiences.
Works by Fanny Hensel, Olivier Messiaen, and Francis Poulenc invite reflection on poetic and spiritual questions. Poulenc’s Un soir de neige, composed in 1944 to poems by Paul Éluard, evokes striking images of winter, paralysis, and solitude – a musical condensation of the experiences of the war years.
A particular focus is placed on the rarely performed songs of the Jewish composer Alfred Tokayer (1900–1943), who composed in Parisian exile and was murdered in Sobibor in 1943. His music bears witness to the shattered European biographies of the 20th century and to the cultural resilience that emerges from them.
